What Age Can Kids Start Chess? How to Teach a Child Chess (2026)

There is no perfect age to start chess. What matters is whether a child can sit with a game for a few minutes and enjoys it. Here is how to tell, the order to teach things in, and how to keep it fun.

The short answer

There is no single right age. Many children start somewhere between four and seven, but readiness matters more than the number. A child is usually ready when they can sit with a game for ten to fifteen minutes, remember a few simple rules and enjoy taking turns. Start with short sessions, teach one piece at a time and play lots of small games before the full game.

Signs your child is ready

  • They enjoy board games and can follow the idea of taking turns.
  • They can concentrate on one activity for ten minutes or more.
  • They can remember that different pieces move in different ways.
  • They are curious: they ask about the pieces or want to play when they see a board.

If they lose interest quickly, put the board away and try again in a few months. Pushing too early is the surest way to put a child off.

What to teach first

  1. The board. Light square in the bottom-right corner, files and ranks, and how to set the pieces up.
  2. One piece at a time. Start with the rook, then the bishop, the queen, the king and the knight. Pawns come last because they have the most special rules.
  3. Mini-games. Before the full game, play small games with only a few pieces, for example pawns only, where the first pawn to reach the other side wins. Children learn how pieces move without being overwhelmed.
  4. Check and checkmate. Teach what check means, the three ways to get out of it, and simple checkmates with a queen or rooks.
  5. Special moves. Castling, promotion and en passant, once the basics feel easy.
  6. The full game. Now play complete games, with simple advice: develop your pieces, control the centre, castle early.

How long and how often

Short and frequent beats long and rare. For young children, ten to twenty minutes a day, a few days a week, is plenty. Stop while they are still enjoying it, so they look forward to the next time.

Keeping it fun

  • Let them win sometimes, especially at the start, then make it gradually harder.
  • Praise good ideas, not just wins. “That was a clever move” matters more than the result.
  • Use puzzles. A short puzzle is a quick win and teaches patterns.
  • Give them someone to play. Children improve fastest when they can play often, which is hard if a parent is not always free.

Tools that help

A structured course. Our free beginner chess course has 78 lessons of about twenty minutes. Levels are set by what a child can do, not by age, and it works on a phone or laptop, no board needed. An AI teacher answers questions, with a daily limit.

An opponent that is always available. An electronic board lets a child play without waiting for an adult. FEMUEY P6 has no screen: colored lights and voice show each move, hints and takebacks let a child try again, and it has 200 puzzles and a two-player mode for playing with family. It works with no phone or Wi-Fi. More options in our guide to kids’ electronic chess boards.

Game review. When they start playing full games, our AI game review explains in plain words which move went wrong and what to look for next time.

FAQ

Can a 4-year-old learn chess?

Some can, especially with mini-games and one piece at a time. If a child cannot yet sit with a game for about ten minutes, wait a few months and try again.

Is it too late to start chess at 10 or 12?

No. Older children often learn the rules faster because they can concentrate for longer. Plenty of players start later and still improve quickly.

How do I teach chess if I don’t play myself?

Learn alongside your child. Our free 78-lesson course works on a phone or laptop, and an electronic board like FEMUEY P6 gives your child an opponent with hints, so you do not need to be an expert.

Does my child need a chess board to take the course?

No. A phone or laptop is enough. A real board helps if your child wants to play with physical pieces.

What warranty and returns come with FEMUEY boards?

Every FEMUEY board has a 1-year warranty. Hardware can be returned within 15 days of delivery, and in-stock orders ship worldwide within 72 hours of payment. See the FAQ for details.
