Chess Computers That Work Without Wi-Fi or a Phone (2026)

Many smart chess boards need a phone app before they can play you. A chess computer with the engine inside the board just switches on and plays. Here is which boards do that, and what to look for.

Disclosure: this guide is written by the FEMUEY team, and we make some of the boards below. Specs for other brands come from each maker’s official product page, checked on 10 October 2026; where a maker does not publish something, we say so. Prices change often, so check the store before you buy.

The short answer

If you want to switch a board on and play the computer straight away, with no Wi-Fi, phone or app, you need a board with the chess engine built into the board itself. Many popular smart boards work differently: they sense your moves, but the opponent runs in an app on your phone.

Boards that play you on their own include the FEMUEY P6 (up to 1800 Elo, no screen), the FEMUEY L6 Pro (up to 2300 Elo, E-Ink display), the handheld FEMUEY Y2, the Millennium ChessGenius Pro, DGT Centaur, Chessnut Evo and SenseRobot.

Two kinds of electronic chess board

  • Chess computers. The engine runs inside the board. You switch on, choose a mode and play. Nothing else needs to be charged, paired or updated first.
  • App-connected boards. The board senses your moves and lights up the computer’s replies, but the computer opponent lives in an app on your phone or tablet, usually connected over Bluetooth.

Neither is better for everyone. App boards are a good fit if your phone is always with you and you mainly play online. A chess computer suits you if you want a game without a phone on the table, play where there is no Wi-Fi, or are buying for a child who should not need a phone to play.

What to check before you buy

  • How strong the engine gets. A beginner will not beat 1800 Elo for a long time, but a club player will want more headroom. Look at the maximum rating, not just the number of levels.
  • What there is to do besides playing. Built-in puzzles and endgame setup keep a board useful between games. L6 Pro and Y2 have 1,000 puzzles each, P6 has 200.
  • Screen or no screen. A display shows notation and settings. A screen-free board like P6 uses lights and voice instead, which many parents prefer for children.
  • Real pieces. Y2 is a handheld with a touchscreen and stylus. If you want to move real pieces, choose a board.
  • Whether you might want to go online later. L6 Pro and Y2 work fully offline, and once connected to Wi-Fi they can also play Lichess from the device, without a phone. P6 stays a standalone board.

What FEMUEY boards do offline

  • P6: a screen-free board with magnetic sensing, an 1800 Elo engine, 200 puzzles, custom endgames, and training, match and two-player modes. Colored lights and voice guide each move; hints and takebacks help you learn. Charges over USB-C.
  • L6 Pro: magnetic pieces with built-in piece storage, a 2300 Elo engine on the board, 1,000 puzzles, custom endgames, move hints, takebacks and game replay, with an E-Ink display beside the board.
  • Y2: a handheld with a touchscreen and stowable stylus, a built-in offline opponent and 1,000 puzzles, for a game or a puzzle on the move.

When another board is a better fit

  • You want large, tournament-style squares: DGT Centaur has 48 mm squares and an 86 mm king.
  • You want a big screen and Chess.com built in: Chessnut Evo.
  • Your phone is always with you and you mostly play online: an app-connected board such as Chessnut Air or GoChess Mini.

FAQ

Can I play against the computer on FEMUEY P6 without a phone?

Yes. P6 has its own 1800 Elo engine. Switch it on, choose a mode and play; no phone, app or Wi-Fi is needed.

Does FEMUEY L6 Pro need Wi-Fi?

Not to play. Its 2300 Elo engine, 1,000 puzzles and endgame practice run on the board. Wi-Fi adds Lichess games from the board, more than 3,000 openings to practise and game sync to the app.

Is a chess computer better than a chess app?

It is different. An app is free and always with you; a chess computer lets you play with real pieces and no screen in front of you, which many players and parents prefer.

Which offline chess computer is best for a beginner?

Look for guidance on each move, hints and takebacks. FEMUEY P6 is built around that. Our guide for children’s boards goes into more detail.

What warranty and returns come with FEMUEY boards?

Every FEMUEY board has a 1-year warranty. Hardware can be returned within 15 days of delivery, and in-stock orders ship worldwide within 72 hours of payment. See the FAQ for details.
